Gus is back!

ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA - AUGUST 15: Angus Monfries (L) of the Power chats with Ken Hinkley the coach of the Power after the round 20 AFL match between Port Adelaide Power and Greater Western Sydney Giants at Adelaide Oval on August 15, 2015 in Adelaide, Australia. Angus Monfries has been named in Port Adelaide’s 25 man squad for Sunday’s Showdown with Adelaide and if certain media reports are to be believed then the former Bomber will make the final cut and play his first AFL game since round 22, 2015.

Not only is the game huge for Port Adelaide to keep their top four ambitions alive but the reality is Angus Monfries  if selected will need to play well this week and beyond to give himself any chance of earning an AFL contract beyond 2017.

The 30 year-old is certainly a Power fan-favourite and will forever by synonymous with Showdowns after “that bounce” goal in 2013.

Monfries has battled some niggling injuries this year but his selection is certainly one that can be justified after some solid SANFL form for the most part this season.

Brett Eddy who is currently leading the goal kicking in the SANFL has been the man many Power fans have called for to be given an opportunity in recent weeks.

Charlie Dixon who kicked five goals against West Coast in round 16 has only kicked more than a single goal once from his last eight appearances. Jarman Impey has also kicked just the two goals from his last eight games.

When Monfries was pushing for an AFL recall earlier in the year he not surprisingly had the support of teammate Paddy Ryder. “I might be being biased as I’m one of his mates. We have a lot of history together. I think Angus is a really smart forward and any team could use a forward of his experience”

It has been a long journey back for Angus Monfries and some pundits did question whether he should have been retained on the Power list for this season. A good performance against the Crows will certainly go some way to repaying the faith.
