Season 2016 was certainly a mixed year for Charlie Dixon at Port Adelaide with the new recruit finishing the year with 30 goals in 18 matches. The ex-Sun endeared himself to the Port faithful with his physical approach and attack on the footy but the Power will need Dixon to have more scoreboard impact in 2017.

The round 10 match last season was arguably the best game the key forward played in Port colours. He kicked 5 goals and proved too strong for the Demon key defenders as he ran riot in one of Port Adelaide’s best team performances of the year. But Dixon would then only kick 4 goals in his next 8 games and failed to kick a goal in the last four games he played at AFL level.

Injury has been a concern for Dixon in the past, in fact the 18 games last year is the most games he has played in a single season. It is also why some thought Port Adelaide were taking a risk in giving up both a first and second round pick to land the Sun. But a key forward was required at Alberton

Dixon underwent ankle surgery in November last year and this week finally sees his return to full training. He is expected to play some role in the club intra trial next week as well as the pre-season games in the lead up to round 1 against Sydney.

While last season was a learning curve at a new club there will be more pressure and expectation on Charlie Dixon this year to contribute goals right from the start. Port Adelaide moved on veteran Jay Schulz and delisted John Butcher at season’s end so all eyes are on Charlie. Is the 26 year-old up for the challenge?
